How to Buy a Pressure Washer

It’s hard not to get frustrated when thinking about the effects of accumulation of dirt, mildew and grease from pollution on the outside of your home. If you ever wondered how it’s possible to clean your entire house with just a sponge and some soap, don’t worry, there’s a better solution– the pressure washer. If you don’t know much about these machines, that’s okay – that’s why we have our pressure washer reviews for you. Known for its power and speed in solving house cleaning problems, the pressure washer is a piece of equipment that must be carefully picked. A wrong choice will eventually result in more frustration and a waste of money.

Homeowners are now very familiar with the lawnmower and understand the limitations of such a device. They know what they need and they purchase something to accommodate to those needs. For example, someone with a large yard understands that they might need a mower they can sit in as to not tire themselves out completely. Pressure washers, on the other hand, is not a familiar household item that everyone owns. Thus, many homeowners are puzzled by terms like PSI and GPM. What does it all mean?

Let’s take a look at the crucial specification needed to asses when considering purchasing a pressure washer cleaner after reading our pressure washer reviews.

There are three different types of pressure washers, and it is pretty simple to select from one of them. The user must first decide on the tasks that they need to perform with the tool. Knowing the goals will yield better decisions at the time of purchase and you will be equipped with the right tool for the job.

Electric pressure washers

Electric pressure washers can have power ranging between 1300 to 1900 PSI. PSI is a metric used to assess how powerful the water is being shot out of the nozzle and stands for pounds per square inch.

Electric pressure washers can be used to wash grills, decks, patios, fences, cars, and more. With low settings, they can also be used to clean small items like toy sets. For this purpose, one can consider a compact and light weight washers to have a multitude of uses. Most electric washers have a spray wand made of steel and detergent tanks on board. They also all come with a variety of nozzles and settings to help you easily adjust the PSI to your needs. Scroll back to the top to read our pressure washer reviews.

Gas pressure washers

Gas engine pressure washers come in two different types. The first has a power range of 2000 to 3100 PSI. This is a substantially higher number than electric pressure washers. Because of this, they can be used to clean boats, siding, patios, decks and housing. Engines must be equipped with overhead-valve or premium overhead cam too ensure safety. The high pressures are also better handed by axial cam pumps with a head made of aluminum or brass. The frame and wheels of gas engine pressure washers are much stronger than other pressure washers because the pressure is also greater.

A gas engine of 3200 to 4200 psi can be used for paint stripping and surface preparation operations. These gas engines are powerful enough that they can also be used for cleaning jobs on construction sites, graffiti removal and fleet maintenance. These washers have an engine designed for commercial use. This means that hoses must be steel-braided with the ability to handle high pressures, and pneumatic tires must be used on steel hubs for high performance and stability. A variety of spray tips must be available for the pro-style steel spray wand of quick-connect coupling. These features make commercial level gas pressure washers expensive and durable.

General procedure for efficient operation

Aside from technical specs, pressure washers can be more effective depending upon the way someone operates it. For vertical surfaces, start cleaning from the bottom to the top and do the opposite when rinsing. Read the color code on the washer nozzle to determine their narrowness and spray pattern. Black is generally used as a soap dispenser because it is a low pressure nozzle. Red has an angle of 0 degrees, yellow has an angle 15 degrees, green has an angle of 25 degrees and white has an angle of 40 degrees. This is the angle the water comes out, so based on your needs you will need to adjust.

If the nozzle is too narrow, then the spray can cut into the surface it is aimed at. A broad nozzle can clean softer surfaces but nothing of extreme caliber. The nozzle must initially be aimed at an inconspicuous or safe area for testing before it is sprayed on an actual object. If the pressure is too intense, then the nozzle and pressure settings can be changed to achieve the ideal configuration.

Damage to the surface can be prevented by holding the nozzle at an angle than aiming it directly at the target. Avoid spraying on delicate areas such as air conditioning ducts, electrical components, light fixtures and lap siding. The nozzle must not be aimed at a particular point on a surface for too long. Doing so can damage the surface permanently. Overall, use common sense when operating heavy machinery.

Uses and Benefits of a Power/Pressure Washer

A power washer can make any cleaning process substantially easier. The equipment is convenient to use and powerful. There are some safety issues, but most brands have done a great job of incorporating fail-safe systems that prevent any sort of injury from occurring. Power washers can be used in a variety of ways for a number of different areas around the home. Below are just a few. If you’re still confused, read more of our pressure washer reviews above.

Exterior siding

Exterior siding or brick can pick up dirt and cake on grime as time goes by and they need to be cleaned at least once a year in normal environmental conditions. Normal cleaning methods will not suffice in situations where the dirt is severely stuck. Power washers can be used effectively to wash that dirt off. With the right mix of pressure and a touch of soap, tough cleaning jobs like house siding can be a breeze with the right pressure washers.

Fencing and grills

Fences made of wood or vinyl require cleaning at least once in a year if you want to keep them in pristine condition. Nobody likes having a dirty, disheveled yard, and keeping the edge of your property clean is just as important as anywhere else. A power washer can make a big difference when normal methods prove to be cumbersome in cleaning tough dirt stains and other major cleaning projects. Power washers can be used in the same way to clean grills. Any grill owner knows the difficulties associated with cleaning those tough-to-reach spots. A washer is an excellent solution to this problem – if you aren’t sure which pressure washer to choose scroll up and read our pressure washer reviews.

Garage door

Any homeowner knows that having a clean and well-kept garage door can make all the difference in maintaining a polished look to the outside of a home. Unfortunately, their appearance can degrade in time with accumulation of dirt. Using a power washer to clean garage doors will improve the overall look of the front façade and save both time and energy in the long run.

Driveways, patios and decks

These are the areas which are more beaten than any part of the house, and therefore they quickly degrade. Accumulation of dirt and pollutants pose ill-effects on their lifespan. You can easily help save years of use on these areas with a pressure washer.

How to use a power washer

First off, you need a water supply. The water supply is measured in gallons per square inch, or GPM. Internal and external dimensions of a garden hose must be compatible with the water supply pre-requisites and inlet fitting.

Although contrary to popular belief, starting up a pressure sensor is not as simple as clicking a button. Steps must be taken to ensure the water channel between the washer and the spray wand is created and hose connections are kept air tight. As the washer starts kicking in, make sure to hold the wand tightly as it can recoil. You can easily avoid this occurrence by setting the device to a low intensity setting at the outset. Residual air must be removed from the system by squeezing the spray wand trigger beforehand as well. Also, we suggest that the washer be turned on for a minute to warm up and the trigger locked during this time. The washer will be ready for use after the nozzle has been inserted into the spray wand.

Certain rules have to be followed in order to ensure safety. If you avoid these rules you can easily injure yourself or someone around you. Tarps are a great solution to protect plants and to collect paint chips after a long job. Paint can chip off during high pressure cleaning and tarps can help in easy disposal. When cleaning, wands should be held at an angle for better cleaning as opposed to holding it head on. This will cause the dirt to be pushed deeper into the surface, rather than off of it. Also, you should always be extremely careful not to spray windows, as they can break under high pressure.

Remember to take necessary caution before starting the washer. Do not point the wand at or near people as high pressure can cut through the skin easily. Always wear safety glasses and never operate a washer while on a ladder or an even surface. Like a gun, these devices are powerful and can have recoil.

Benefits of using a power washer

Power washers help protect homes from harmful contaminants such as mildew, mold, algae and dirt. Washers can also help overall hygiene and help eliminate any chance of getting sick from something like mold.

Cleaning your home regularly can help you avoid costly home repairs. Older homes which are regularly power washed have been found to stand at about $12,000 – $16,000 higher in price as opposed to those that aren’t power washed. A small investment of $300 – $500 for a washer could save you a lot more money in the long run.
